Regional Attractions

Leysin is situated at the eastern end of Lake Geneva, and is easily accessible by road and rail. In the region there are various attractions that are worth visiting. Below is a brief overview of some of the attractions in the area.

Geneva, Lausanne and Montreux are all within easy reach of Leysin. Geneva is a beautiful city on the western side of Lake Geneva. This picturesque old town is worth a visit and the Rolex clock made out of a bed of flowers and the 'Jet D'eau' are tourist favourites.

Lausanne is also an old town on the shores of Lake Geneva with good bars and restaurants on the lake front in the Ouchy quarter of Lausanne. The main town is a modern bustling town with a vast array of shops and an excellent nightlife.

Montreux is a smaller but very wealthy town with good restaurants and stunning views from the lakeside paths. There is also a statue of Freddie Mercury on the lake front as this was a favourite recording place for Queen and many other rock bands. In fact the song 'Smoke on the water' by Deep Purple is a true story about the burning of the Montreux Casino, whilst Frank Zappa was performing inside. The Montreux Jazz festival takes place from July 4th - 19th. This years line up has not yet been released, in recent years some of the acts included: Van Morrison, John Legend, Placebo, Chemical Brothers, Stereophonics, Morcheeba, Beastie Boys, Faithless and many, many more. Gruyere is a short distance from Leysin and the old town is well worth the visit. Gruyere is a walled medieval town on top of a hill and also lends its name to Gruyere cheese. Also in the area there are numerous castles, including Chateau de Chillon and Chateau d'Aigle.

The area around Leysin is home to many vineyards. The local vineyards organise wine tasting during the summer months. There are many smaller 'caves' for wine tasting but one of the more renowned in the region takes place in Vevey on a Saturday. Vevey is also home to the largest outdoor market in Europe.
